John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University, has been elected to the executive committee of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies (ACES.) The appointment recognizes his lifelong achievements in the field, allowing him to guide research strategies and spotlight academic excellence at the University.
“The committee role is strategy and decision-making oriented,” said Orlowski, “I hope to make a further contribution to the advancement of theoretical and applied knowledge in the field of comparative economics.”
ACES is the leading scholarly organization for the support of comparative economic studies. Its worldwide membership includes academics, economists and political scientists employed by international agencies, governments, private firms and banks, as well as policy makers. The Association’s mission is to enable scholarly exchange among persons interested in comparative studies of economic systems, institutions and economic performance and development to further the growth of research and instruction in these topics.
At Sacred Heart, Orlowski teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in global financial markets and institutions and an undergraduate quantitative class in economic and financial forecasting. He has been a Saybrook College Fellow at Yale University since October 2009. He has also recently taught doctoral seminars on financial crisis and risk management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and at the University of Rome.
Prior to joining Sacred Heart University, Orlowski taught at New York University, and before that at the Karol Adamiecki University of Economics in Katowice, Poland, where he also received his Ph.D. in economics in 1979. He has also taught at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Warsaw. His professional associations are numerous as are his awards and accomplishments, and he has authored books and contributed to many scholarly publications.
The executive committee nomination and election process is conducted annually and worldwide among ACES members. Nominees must be approved by the association’s existing executive board, which is comprised of prominent scholars in international economics. Orlowski was one of only two members newly elected to the executive board. The other member was Professor Ali Kutan of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, IL.
Orlowski has been a member of ACES since 1990 and said the election is “a recognition of scholarship, published work and service on the editorial board of the association’s journal, Comparative Economic Studies and is reflective of the esteem in which the members of the Association hold one’s contribution to the Association and to the field of economics.”
With regard to his committee responsibilities, he said, “I will be helping to shape strategies for new research in comparative economics, particularly on emerging market economies. I will also help elect editors for the association’s journals. In addition, I will help determine the programs for scientific meetings of the association as well as the content of association-hosted sessions at the American Economic Association Annual Convention, which is the most important international conference in the field of economics and finance. Finally, I will be part of the decision-making on special scientific awards granted to scholars in this field.”
The appointment reflects well on Sacred Heart University. “It recognizes academic excellence, which translates into attracting better students and research endeavors,” said Orlowski. “It also aids the accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.”
Orlowski hopes to apply his committee experiences in the classroom. “My students like it when I tell them about the problems faced by the economics profession today, particularly in the aftermath of the recent financial crisis.”
