Gustav Holst: The Composer and His Music

The musical works of Gustav Holst are considered to be the cornerstone of 20th century repertoire for concert band. Holst’s Suite in Eb is one of the few band compositions to be transcribed for orchestra. Dr. Jon C. Mitchell explores the life and music of Gustav Holst in this interactive workshop hosted by Sacred Heart University.

- Director’s who perform with the ensemble will have their registration fee waived

Jon C. Mitchell is considered to be one of the foremost authorities on the life and works of Gustav Holst. His research has
appeared in over seventy publications, and five published books, including A Comprehensive Biography of Composer Gustav Holst (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2001) and From Kneller Hall to Hammersmith: The Band Works of Gustav Holst (Tutzing, Germany: Haus Hans Schneider, 1990). Important articles include “Holst, Stock, and The Planets” (Journal of The Conductors Guild, 2003), “Gustav Holst: The Hammersmith Sketches” (for the premiere issue of the CBDNA Journal) and “JAC Somerville and the British Band in the Era of Holst and Vaughan Williams” (for The Wind Ensemble and Its Repertoire; Essays on the Fortieth Anniversary of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, ed.
