GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN CATHOLIC SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

The Isabelle Farrington School of Education has coordinated its Master of Arts in Teaching program with the University's Center for Spirituality and Ministry to offer a concentration within the MAT degree: Catholic School Leadership.  This program is also available as a Graduate Professional Certificate.


MAT with a Concentration in Catholic School Leadership
To earn the MAT with a concentration in Catholic School Leadership, students complete the MAT requirements with concentration requirements (12 credits) chosen from among the following two-credit courses:

  • IC 517H: Educational Leadership in Catholic Schools
  • IC 527H: Management I: Catholic School Finances and Development
  • IC 528H: Management II: Catholic School Personnel Supervision & Evaluation
  • IC 535H: Building a Faith Community
  • IC 537H: History and Culture of Catholic Schools in the United States
  • IC 547H: Curriculum and Instruction Design in Catholic Schools
  • IC 560H: Principles and Issues in Catholic School Law

Graduate Professional Certificate (14 credits)
Individuals who would like to specialize in Catholic School Leadership without pursuing further courses in Education may want to consider a Graduate Certificate in Catholic School Leadership. Graduate application procedures must be followed. The courses include:

SPRING 2008

IC 535H   Building a Faith Community - 2 credits
Instructor:  Rev. Antony R. Gatt, Ph.D.

Location:  Room 1-C-34, Isabelle Farrington School of Education
                 Sacred Heart University,
Cambridge Campus, Trumbull, CT

This course is designed to provide participants with knowledge of and experience in the theological, pedagogical and developmental dimensions of the believer as builder of a vibrant, just and loving community. Exploring the meaning of the sacraments of the Church as personal and sacred encounters with God, the course will explore the ways in which sacramental life motivates a faith community to educate religiously.

SUMMER 2008

IC 547H  Curriculum and Instructional Design in Catholic Schools - 2 credits
Instructor:  Thomas V. Forget, Ph.D.
Dates: June 30, July 1, July 2, 2008
Time: Monday - Wednesday, 8:45 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Sacred Heart University, Fairfield Campus

This course will present current methods and criteria for creating and integrating Catholic religious truths and values into an entire curriculum using an interdisciplinary approach. Participants will design and develop such a curriculum. 

FALL 2008

IC 517H  Educational Leadership in Catholic Schools - 2 credits
Instructor:  Ann Morrow Heekin, Ph.D.

Time:  Monday - Wednesday, 8:45 - 5:00 PM
Location:  Isabelle Farrington School of Education
                 Sacred Heart University, Cambridge Campus, Trumbull, CT

This course will develop skills required to exercise spiritual leadership in a pastoral or Catholic school setting, specifically in the following areas: preserving and enhancing Catholic identity; writing and implementing a mission statement; imparting Gospel values and Christian ethics; and building  a faith community within the parish school setting.

SPRING 2009

IC 527H  Management I: Catholic School Finances and Development - 2 credits
Instructor:  Elinor R. Ford, Ed.D.
Dates:  March 26, 27, 28, 2009
Time:  Thursday - Saturday, 8:45 - 5:00 PM
Location:  Isabelle Farrington School of Education
                 Sacred Heart University, Cambridge Campus, Trumbull, CT

This course is designed to provide students with competency in finance: budgeting, fundraising, educational economics, financial planning, tuition collection, and strategic planning. 

SUMMER 2009

IC 528H  Management II: Catholic School Personnel Supervision and Evaluation- 2 credits
Instructor:  Elinor R. Ford, Ed.D.
Dates:  June 29, June 30, July 1, 2009
Time:  Monday - Wednesday, 8:45 - 5:00 PM
Location:  Sacred Heart University, Fairfield Campus 

This course will present and overview of managing all aspects of personnel with emphases on responsibility, delegation and student discipline.  Participants will prepare and present a performance evaluation.
