JOEL BLOCK, ED.D.
Joel Warren Block received an Ed.D. in Earth Science Education from City University, California; a CAS (6th year) from Wesleyan University, Connecticut; a MS from Southern Connecticut State University, and a BS from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. He joined the SHU staff in 1988 as an Adjunct with a concentration in Astronomy, Geology, and Science and the Bible.
 
Dr. Block received the "Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching" which was awarded to him at the National Academy of Science and The White House, Washington, DC. His expertise involves student field studies in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Bermuda which have been ongoing for almost 20 years. He pioneered "Project Advance in France" which was voted a "National Exemplar Program in the Earth Sciences" by the National Science Teachers Association and the National Association of Geology Teachers. Dr Block served as an archaeological/geological field coordinator for programs between the University of Bordeaux, the University of Basal, Norwalk Connecticut's Brien McMahon High School, and Wesleyan University in prehistoric and medieval archaeological excavations in France and Italy.
 
Dr. Block has over 20 publications appearing in state, national, and international journals in geology and the earth sciences and the Bible. He is also President of Geological Field Investigations, Inc., a nonprofit, educational organization providing field experiences for Connecticut teachers and students in Europe and in New England.
 
Dr. Block served in the United States Infantry in Germany (1962-1964) before leaving the service as a Captain in 1967.
 
This year (2005) Dr. Block joins the full time staff in his 17th year at SHU with a total of 42 years teaching experience.
