Since 1996, Dr. Vaughan has managed the Fairfield and Trumbull locations of Sacred Heart’s Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine clinics. Dr. Vaughan is a 1976 graduate of the University of Vermont with a Bachelors of Science Physical Therapy, a 1985 graduate of the University of Massachusetts with a Master of Science in Exercise Science, and received a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Sacred Heart University in May 2010. He has 28 years of experience as a Department Head or Manager in both Physical Therapy and Athletic Training. Vic holds board certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, and currently practices in the areas of outpatient physical therapy with an expertise in general orthopedics rehabilitation, amputee rehabilitation, sports rehabilitation, and foot care. He has attended numerous continuing education courses in manual therapy and manipulation techniques, amputee and prosthetic rehabilitation, knee, shoulder and spinal care.
Since 1998 Dr. Vaughan has also been an adjunct faculty member in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Sacred Heart University. He teaches in the areas of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular pathologies, cardiopulmonary and acute care, amputee and prosthetic rehabilitation, and physical therapy practice and management issues. He lectures regularly on amputee care, shoulder and knee rehabilitation and the use of isokinetics in rehabilitation. Dr. Vaughan has published research on muscle atrophy following immobilization as well as physical therapy following arthroscopic meniscectomy. He has also co-authored a chapter on the rehabilitation of persons with trans-tibial amputation in Orthotics and Prosthetics by Lusardi and Neilsen.
As a very active member of the Connecticut Physical Therapy Association Dr. Vaughan currently serves as the Federal Affairs Liaison for the Public Policy Committee. His past roles in the association include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and committee chair positions. He has been actively involved in state and federal legislative issues and successfully led the effort to obtain the right for patients to have direct access to physical therapists in Connecticut. Dr. Vaughan was also instrumental in establishing mandatory continuing education in order to maintain licensure and in achieving licensure for physical therapy assistants. For his efforts in this arena he was awarded the State Legislative Leadership Award by the American Physical Therapy Association. This annual award is presented to one or two recipients for outstanding leadership in legislative issues at the state level. In 2007 the DPT Class of 2008 established the Vic Vaughan Leadership Award, which is annually presented to a the third-year DPT student who demonstrates exceptional leadership in the SHU student physical therapy association.
