MISSION AND PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The mission of the undergraduate Chemistry Program parallels the mission of the University in its vision and purpose. The program is committed to academic excellence and seeks to:
Provide students who choose to major in chemistry preparation for industry, graduate school or professional school. This is achieved through a broad-based education which includes exposure to the major areas of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, environmental, inorganic, organic, and physical) in both the classroom setting and in laboratory. The required undergraduate research component of the degree provides an opportunity for the investigation of an original project.
Other primary objectives of the program are:
- to allow student to continue to build upon an undergraduate background in chemistry by advanced study leading to a graduate degree;
- to assist in the development of students majoring in other science related fields by providing chemistry courses which provide the necessary knowledge based on the chemical field;
- teach students to think critically and allow students to appreciate the central role chemistry plays in the world;
- to provide non-science majors with an exposure to the dynamic field of chemistry and an appreciation of the scientific process. The courses provide students with the background information necessary to make informed decisions concerning chemical issues in this complex world.
