SEAMUS CAREY, PH.D.
Dr. Carey, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has served in a number of leadership positions in his academic career, including the chairmanship of the Philosophy Department at Manhattan College. During his tenure as chair, the number of students majoring or minoring in philosophy grew from two in 2001 to more than 50 today. He also served on the college’s faculty senate, as chair of the School of Arts curriculum committee, and as director of its Center for Professional Ethics. Dr. Carey is a regular speaker in many settings and has taught at the college level for 17 years.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Vassar College, and his master's degree and doctorate in philosophy from Fordham University. He also did post-graduate study in philosophy at University College, Dublin, Ireland. The author of numerous articles and books, his work focuses on the intersection between philosophy, parenting and family life. His latest book, Growing Up with Your Children: 7 Turning Points in the Lives of Parents, was released in January 2010 from Rowman and Littlefield. He also wrote The Faithful Parent: Discovering the Spirit of Purposeful Parenting (2007) and The Whole Child: Restoring Wonder to the Art of Parenting (2003), also published by Rowman and Littlefield. His areas of philosophical interest include 20th century continental philosophy, ethics and environmental philosophy. In addition to his work in the academy, Seamus Carey is an avid sportsman, having played basketball at Vassar, as well as Irish football and hurling in the Bronx and in Ireland.
