Architect Duncan G. Stroik

The University of Notre Dame’s annual Hesburgh Alumni Lecture will take place at Sacred Heart University on Thursday, March 4, at 7 P.M. The nationally respected architect, Professor Duncan G. Stroik, will address the question, “Is There a Sacred Architecture?” in Sacred Heart University’s Schine Auditorium. The lecture will be followed by a tour of the University’s new Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The event is free and open to the public.
 
The Hesburgh Lecture is named for Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, for 35 years the president of the University of Notre Dame. It is sponsored by the University of Notre Dame’s Alumni Association in areas where the association is active and is meant to bring the unique resources of Notre Dame into the community. This year’s lecture is co-sponsored by Sacred Heart’s University College. It is also presented as part of the Human Journey Colloquia Series and is an element of the Year of the Chapel, a year-long series of events at SHU to celebrate its new Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
 
Professor Stroik earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and his master’s from Yale University. He helped to implement a new curriculum in classical architecture at Notre Dame and is an associate professor there. He was instrumental in founding the Institute for Sacred Architecture and the Sacred Architecture Journal, of which he is editor. It is his thesis that no renaissance in architecture and civil society is possible without a revival in sacred architecture. Professor Stroik is working, at present, on ecclesiastical and commercial projects in six states as well as a monastery in Chicago.
