"BOOK ENDS" READING CLINIC AT SHU

“BOOK ENDS” is the Sacred Heart University Reading Clinic located in the Cambridge Building at 7 Cambridge Drive (right off Old Town Road).  It opened its doors for the first time on January 26, 2008 and is rapidly becoming very popular because of our quality instruction and nurturing environment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Students in first grade through fifth having difficulty in reading are eligible for enrollment in our clinic.

WHAT IS THE PLAN?
Your child will be assessed in reading and writing by a certified teacher pursuing Connecticut Reading Certification, an intervention plan and specialized tutoring based on each child’s individual needs will be developed. Karen Waters, Director of Connecticut Literacy Specialist Program (CLSP) and Clinical Assistant Professor of Education will supervise and coordinate all aspects of your child’s instructional and assessment plan along with your child’s tutor, and is available to respond to questions and concerns from parents.

Parents will have an opportunity to meet and speak with your child’s tutor after each session, and will receive weekly take home reading materials.  Progress reports will be sent home every three weeks.

PARENT WORKSHOPS
Research has proven that home/school partnerships lead to increased academic achievement. Parents will have opportunities to participate in free parent workshops that will be offered during the time that your child is being tutored.  These workshops are designed to provide you with strategies for helping children at home.

WHAT IS THE COST?
The fee for this 12 session intensive program is $240.  In order to provide high quality instruction that is tailored to children’s needs, enrollment will be limited to the first 20 students on a first-come, first serve basis.

Session Times:
Depending on enrollment, your child may be scheduled to attend one of the two sessions:
4:30 – 5:30  or  5:30 – 7:00.
