Sacred Heart University’s Department of Public Safety won first place honors from the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) at the IAEM 57th Annual Conference in October 2009. The first place award for Technology & Innovation was presented to SHU’s Executive Director of Emergency Management & DPS, Paul Healy, and Director of Public Safety, Jack Fernandez, at the conference in Orlando, Florida. The honors were presented within the division that covers state, regional or national government, international, or non-profit organizations, for the rollout of SHU’s Comprehensive All-Hazard & Business Continuity Plan via Microsoft SharePoint software.

The IAEM Technology & Innovation Awards recognize developments to improve emergency management operations, public education or the emergency management/homeland security field.

SHU’s new emergency web-based Comprehensive All-Hazard & Business Continuity Plan was first unveiled to local, state and federal emergency services representatives at an on-campus conference in September. The system was created by the University’s department of Information Technology by using Microsoft SharePoint software. It allows the University’s emergency plan to be accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to all of SHU’s municipal, state and federal emergency services partners.

According to Mr. Healy, “Winning the first place award for Technology & Innovation from IAEM is recognition by one's peers that the SHU Public Safety Team is working each and every day to improve campus safety and security for our community.”
