ABOUT THE CONNECTICUT LITERACY SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION

The Isabelle Farrington College of Education is now offering the full scope of literacy programs.  The overall goal of this program is to prepare our students to lead educators and school districts into the best practices of school reform available in the 21st century. They will be knowledgeable proponents of action research and change agents assisting schools in promoting community literacy as well as student performance. 

Through this program certified Connecticut teachers may obtain certification in the following:

  • Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist (102)
  • Remedial Reading Consultant (097)
  • Sixth year degree in Literacy

There are 21 credits of required graduate coursework to earn the Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist (102) Certification (including 3 credits in a public school clinic and 3 credits in a one-to-one clinic). 

There are 12 credits of required graduate coursework to earn a Remedial Reading Consultant (097) Certification.

After the (102) and (097) certification courses are completed, there are 3 credits of elective graduate coursework required to earn the Sixth Year Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy.
