GRADUATE TEACHER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Prof Giarrantano and Dr. Libby
"Bring us your Bachelor's degree and we'll teach you how to become a qualified, confident teacher in less than 2 years."

Our Internship Program is a full-time initial teacher certification program where interns are placed in a school system for one year working as instructional assistants getting hands on experience while completing their student teaching requirements and completing graduate courses in the evening. In turn, your internship will pay for up to 33 credits of your graduate program.

If you want to teach – whether you’re fresh out of college, looking to change careers, or ready to get back to work after raising the kids – Sacred Heart University’s Graduate Teacher Internship Program offers more major benefits than any comparable program in the region. “This is really where teaching comes to life,” says former school principal Michael Giarratano, citing the program’s effective sequence of studies. SHU prepares students up front with rigorous classroom learning. Following that is a full year of extraordinary experience – as an intern in a local school system. You can earn your Connecticut state teacher certification and/or a Master’s in Teaching (MAT) along the way – in under 2 years, with graduate tuition paid by the school system where you’re interning. The result of it all is an enormous advantage for every student in the program. As Dr. Lois Libby, program founder, says, “School systems keep on telling us that SHU interns are more confident and better prepared than any others they see.” It’s simple.

While this is a Connecticut-based teaching certification program, teachers certified outside of Connecticut may also apply for the Internship program.
