Congratulations! You have made the decision to investigate making study abroad part of your undergraduate academic plans. You are about to join an increasing number of Sacred Heart University students who have taken advantage of a valuable opportunity for intellectual and emotional growth. Some other important benefits to studying abroad are:- to attain personal and intellectual growth
- to experience cultural diversity
- to succeed in a different academic environment
- to learn or perfect a foreign language
- to diversify your studies
- to enhance future employment opportunities
- to travel and meet new people
Following are some preliminary steps and information to assist you in your study abroad plans. We are ready to help you every step of the way to make your study abroad experience the most unforgettable experience of your undergraduate years.
- The first step is completing the Study Abroad Initial Intake Form for the Study Abroad office. We use this form to obtain basic information, determine your interests, eligibility, etc.
- Click here to download the intake form in PDF. Print the form, fill it out and send it or fax it to:

- This web site will provide you with details on available programs, and how the study abroad process works. It will help you answer questions such as whether you wish to participate in a semester program or summer program, a sponsored program or an approved program. It also explains such issues as study abroad fees, transfer of grades or credits (depending on whether the program is sponsored or approved), applicability of financial aid, summer programs, withdrawal policies, billing, and consequences of participating in non-approved programs.
- Next, we conduct a degree audit, and discuss possible course selections, in conjunction with your academic advisor. The goal is to ensure that your curriculum will continue to advance you toward graduation while you are abroad. We review appropriate web sites, course offerings, academic calendars, etc. and give you a “proposed coursework form” to complete.
- Click here to download the proposed coursework form in PDF. Print the form, fill it out and send it or fax it to:

- Once you determine the program suited for your specific needs, we guide you through the appropriate application process.
- Applications for sponsored program participants go before a Sacred Heart University faculty committee that determines final eligibility.
- Applications for approved program participants are forwarded to the appropriate CCIS sponsoring institution for review.
- You are notified in writing of your acceptance for all programs. Once accepted, you receive the appropriate packet of study abroad forms for completion. The forms cover issues such as medical, insurance, estimated cost of the program, obtaining a visa (if necessary), SHU registration and housing for your semester of return, and applying for an International Student Identification Card (ISIC). Click here to learn about the benefits of the ISIC card. Applications are also available in the Sacred Heart University Study Abroad office. Students can apply by phone or online.
- To help prepare you for your study abroad experience, we provide an orientation/pre-departure session before you leave campus. Sessions include discussion of missing forms, important government/travel web sites and safety tips. We usually invite previous study abroad “alums” to participate in general question and answer discussions.
- We maintain close contact with you via email while you are abroad, and guide you through the registration and housing processes for your semester of return to SHU. We also assist you in the event that you need to make any changes in your course selections abroad.
- Finally, we submit final grade sheets to our Registrar's office and oversee the transferability of credit or grades. Also, as part of the re-entry process we encourage you to complete an evaluation form to provide us with important feedback regarding your study abroad experience.
- Click here to download the evaluation form in PDF. Print the form, fill it out and send it or fax it to:
