Velma Heller, Ed. D., Assistant Professor in the Isabelle Farrington College of Education at Sacred Heart University.
Dr. Heller received a BA in Education/Psychology from Queens College, CUNY and a MS in Reading from the University of Bridgeport where she also earned her Ed.D.in Educational Leadership and Management. She qualified for Administrative Certification at Fairfield University.
Dr. Heller joined the Sacred Heart community in 2002 upon her retirement from the Westport Public Schools after a career in teaching and administration that spanned over 30 years. While her initial responsibilities at Sacred Heart were as a student teacher supervisor and adjunct professor, as a full time faculty member in the Graduate Education Program since 2005, she has taught the Student Teaching Seminar and culminating Masters requirements: the Professional Practices Project and the Master’s Project. Among her other responsibilities are serving as Coordinator of Student Teacher Supervisors and of the DSAP Program and as a member of the GPA Waiver Committee and the Curriculum Committee. Within the university community she has been actively involved as a member of the Strategic Planning and Budget Committee.
Prior to her retirement from the Westport schools, Dr. Heller’s broad background included experience as: classroom teacher, reading specialist, assistant principal, principal, district wide Director of Curriculum and Staff Development and as Director of Supervision and Evaluation. She also served the school district on school building committees, long term goals committees, curriculum and staff development committees, the CT Commission on Excellence in Education: School Readiness Committee, the NAEP Writing Assessment Panel and Inter district Assessment Consortia. Dr. Heller is very involved in her own community, having been an elected member of the Westport Representative Town Meeting for the past 8 years. She serves as Education Committee chair and on the Long Range Planning, Health and Human Services and Ordinance Committees of this body.
Her other interests include spending time with her family, travel, theater, dance, music and as much reading as time permits.
