Two organizations dedicated to lifelong learning awarded a total of 10 scholarships to working adult students who are engaged in academic programs at Sacred Heart University. The scholars selected attend University College, SHU’s resource for “non-traditional” students who must often balance family and career responsibilities with the demands of higher education.

Learning in Retirement, which meets at the University’s Stamford campus, and Fairfield Lifelong Learners will present $1,000 scholarships to 10 students, with half the amount paid out each semester. The honorees and their families were recognized at a special ceremony on Tuesday, August 11, in the Boardroom of the William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center on campus.
 
University College Dean Mary Lou DeRosa said the scholarships are based on the part-time students’ “dedication to their studies, their excellent academic achievement, and their determination to succeed” as they work to obtain a degree at Sacred Heart University. The one-time non-renewable awards are for the coming academic year, and recipients were chosen by members of the University College staff.

The scholarship recipients are Anthony Vataj, of Yonkers, New York, and Connecticut residents Stassavaria Thompson, Bridgeport; Steve Cominsky, Fairfield; Katarina Csorgoova, Weston; and Adriana Reyes, Bridgeport. Also, Ehaab Zabaneh, Stratford; Violet Karacsony, Stamford; Jennifer Cunliffe, Stratford; Maria Brito, Stamford; and Angelica Gorrio, Stamford.
