WHAT DO I WANT TO BE?

What Do I Want to Be?

One way to begin exploring majors and careers starts with questioning yourself. Take a few minutes and reflect on the following questions.

  • What jobs, professions, and occupations have you thought of or dreamed about since childhood?
  • What subjects did you enjoy in high school? What subjects did you do well in?
  • What subjects(s) do you feel academically strong in?
  • What extracurricular activities do you enjoy?
  • What activities did you participate in while in high school? What did you learn about yourself from them?
  • What are your strengths? Best qualities? What do your fiends like best about you?
  • What are your weaknesses? Limitations?
  • What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment? Why was it special to you?
  • What kind of work environment do you picture yourself in five years from now? Ten years from now?

After you have completed these questions, review the answers.  Are there any reoccurring themes?

Reoccurring themes are good indicators of your interests, abilities and preferences.

The Office of Career Development purchases the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs Type Indicator to assist Sacred Heart University students in making major and career decisions. It is our philosophy that assessment tests are only one tool for helping students identify majors and careers. We require students who take an assessment through the Office of Career Development to work with a career counselor before and after the assessment. These meetings keep misinterpretations to a minimum, assist the student in getting the most from the assessment and provide direction for making decisions.
