The Pioneer Football Team took to the field, defeating the Big Green of Dartmouth, 24-21. Presidential InaugurationJohn J. Petillo, Ph.D., was inaugurated as the sixth president of SHU on September 21, 2011. Dr. Petillo, former dean of the Welch College of Business, served as interim president before he was named the new president of SHU last March. Remembering 9/11 Candlelight ServiceIn observance of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the SHU community gathered for a candlelight vigil and mass at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. A crowd of 500 or more formed a candlelit circle around the quad, offering prayers for those who lost their lives on that tragic day. Pioneer Open 2011Sacred Heart University’s 22nd Annual Pioneer Open Golf Tournament took place on Tuesday, May 31st at The Patterson Country Club in Fairfield. The event raised money for SHU's Scholarship Fund. Discovery Dinner 2011Sacred Heart University’s 22nd Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday, April 27th, broke records, garnering more than $570,000 for scholarship assistance—the most raised by the Discovery Dinner in its 22 year history. The Messiah 2010The New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Cathedral of Saint Joseph Schola Cantorum perform Handel's Messiah in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Move-In Day 2010The SHU community welcomed the first-year students this past weekend on move-in day. Everyone pitched in to help with the move and put the new students at ease. Student Commons GroundbreakingOn May 6, 2010, Sacred Heart University broke ground on a new student commons building. The planned facility will be 46,000 square feet and will link the upper and lower campuses. Discovery Dinner 2010SHU hosted its 21st Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010. The gala honors notable individuals while raising funds for SHU’s Discovery Scholar Grants program, which provides a tuition-free education to low-income students in Fairfield County. Father Michael JoncasOne of the most productive and popular composers of church music premiered a new piece, “A Time of Jubilee,” at Sacred Heart University. Joncas, best known for the beloved hymn, “On Eagles’ Wings,” presented “A Time of Jubilee” on Wednesday, April 14, at a Vespers service in the University’s new Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Candidates DaySHU’s Department of Government and Politics, along with student organizations, College Democrats and College Republicans, hosted Candidates Day on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Freezin' For A ReasonSHU students, faculty and staff members ventured out into the frigid temperatures to participate in the annual ‘Freezin’ for a Reason’ to benefit the Burroughs Community Center in Bridgeport. Founder's Day 2010Founder's Day represents the anniversary of the signing of the charter that established Sacred Heart University in 1963 and traditionally, faculty and staff are honored for the milestone number of years that they have worked at SHU.
