Remembering 9/11 Candlelight ServiceIn observance of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the SHU community gathered for a candlelight vigil and mass at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. A crowd of 500 or more formed a candlelit circle around the quad, offering prayers for those who lost their lives on that tragic day. The Don Coonley Media Studies AwardAt the Department of Communication and Media Studies presentation of "The MAX," Dr. Sid Gottlieb presented the first annual Don Coonley Award, named for the founder of the Media Students Department. Discovery Dinner 2011Sacred Heart University’s 22nd Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday, April 27th, broke records, garnering more than $570,000 for scholarship assistance—the most raised by the Discovery Dinner in its 22 year history. Student Commons GroundbreakingOn May 6, 2010, Sacred Heart University broke ground on a new student commons building. The planned facility will be 46,000 square feet and will link the upper and lower campuses. Discovery Dinner 2010SHU hosted its 21st Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010. The gala honors notable individuals while raising funds for SHU’s Discovery Scholar Grants program, which provides a tuition-free education to low-income students in Fairfield County. Father Michael JoncasOne of the most productive and popular composers of church music premiered a new piece, “A Time of Jubilee,” at Sacred Heart University. Joncas is best known for the beloved hymn, “On Eagles’ Wings." The event featured a special presentation on “Catholic Schools, Public Schools, and the Common Good” by Dr. Brian Stiltner, associate professor of Religious Studies. Hearts for Haiti All-NighterIn response to the massive devastation caused by the Haitian earthquake in January 2010, scores of students and members of the SHU community descended on University Commons one month later for an all-night benefit. Winners of THE MAXThe Department of Media Studies and Digital Culture, in conjunction with the SHU Student Multimedia Channel, presented winners of THE MAX, a media arts exhibition that showcases the work of Media Studies and Communication and Technology Studies students. Archbishop DemetriosSHU’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit was the setting for a public address by the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, Archbishop Demetrios, on “St. Paul: the Apostle of Joy.” Holiday Concert 2009The choirs and vocal ensembles of SHU's Academic Music Program and the Concert Band presented the annual Winter Concert on December 6 in the new Chapel of the Holy Spirit on campus.
