FAIRFIELD, Conn., April 22, 2004—Sacred Heart University held its 15th Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Dinner on Saturday, April 17. Almost 400 friends of the University gathered for the celebration at the William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center on the University's Fairfield campus. More than $350,000, a 22% increase over last year's total, was raised to provide scholarships for deserving students.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of 2004 Discovery Awards by the University's president, Dr. Anthony J. Cernera. In addition to Bishop Lori, the honorees included the Honorable R. James Nicholson, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See; Dr. Edmond Israel, Honorary Chairman of Clearstream International; and Suzanne Nicholson, noted artist and children's advocate. Michael J. Kinney, University Trustee and alumnus of the class of '72, was honored with the 2004 Alumni Award of Excellence. Dave Price, weather personality and featured reporter for CBS News' The Early Show, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, along with 18 Sacred Heart University scholarship students, was among the special guests.
