Caitlin Robles Business Administration, '07 Sacred Heart University Web Content Manager
|
COLLEGE MAJOR
My major was Business Administration with a concentration in Management.
JOB POSITIONS
My first job position since graduation is actually still my current position. See below!
CURRENT POSITION
My current position is Web Content Manager of the Sacred Heart University website. Yup, I guess I just didn’t want to leave after graduation! Although I lived in Milford, CT – I lived at SHU all four years (totally suggest living on campus!) which helped me get more involved with the campus and “college life.” I applied for a work study job in University College and worked for them for all four years, including some breaks. They trusted me to manage their portion of the website, which is how I came into contact with my current boss and the Web Content Management department at Sacred Heart. She saw how interested I was in the website and a month before I graduated offered me a job. I started work the day after graduation.
TYPICAL WORK DAY
A typical work day for me as Web Content Manager of the Sacred Heart University website is completely different every day. Besides the general updating of content, sending out newsletters and keeping everything new, fresh & up to date, something new and exciting is always happening at the University and can be featured online.
POSITIVES
Working on a website that I have practically lived on for the last four years definitely helped because I was able to see the website through a student, prospective student, as well as an alumni’s eyes. It has enabled me to think about what changes would be best for those that are visiting the website.
NEGATIVES
It’s frustrating sometimes when you have to rely on others for content. You know what you want to do with certain pages but you don’t know the information. Definitely try to plan ahead because when you leave things down to the wire it’s so much more frustrating and nerve-racking. Also – the Internet is always changing. One day people might like reading blogs and the next day they’ve abandoned them and gone to Twitter. You definitely have to keep up with the times and research new things people are concentrating on.
LIFESTYLE
I’ve become obsessed with the Internet, technology and my email (my blackberry never leaves my side). Besides that, not much has changed. Oh, and I never go online on the weekends anymore – it’s the only break I get during the week :)
COLLEGE PREPARATION
College prepared me for the “real world” by making me be on time (professors hate when you’re late) and to be responsible. By working on campus I got to work in a large organization and the transition to a full time job was easy.
CAREER ADVICE
Definitely try to work in the field of the job you think you want to pursue by doing an internship. Even doing things like work study can help you realize what you like and/or don’t like about certain jobs. I had no idea that my work study job was going to be related to my career after college. It’s unquestionably a worthwhile experience.
SHU EXPERIENCE
Sacred Heart University was my first choice when I was looking for schools. I liked that it was close to home, not too big but not too small, and had an exceptional educational reputation. My parents and I both fell in love with the campus & everything that came with it when we came for Open House. I met a lot of great friends while going to school here as well as a lot of faculty and staff that I’m very lucky to be able to now work with.
