Michael J. McCabe American Studies, '77 Private Practice Lawyer
|
COLLEGE MAJOR
I was an American Studies major. I wanted to be a lawyer since junior high.
JOB POSITIONS
I went to law school right after graduation. Once I graduated law school and took the bar exam, I was able to secure an associate's position.
CURRENT POSITION
Right now I have my own private practice in Milford.
TYPICAL WORK DAY
There's no such thing! It all depends on the schedule and the time of year. I could spend most of the week in the office, or I could spend 3-4 days per week traveling to various courts around the state.
POSITIVES
I enjoy helping people with their problems - using my expertise to get people out of their jams, or showing them that it's not as bad as they thought.
NEGATIVES
Dealing with lawyers who have no sense of civility. Some of the systems and procedures in court waste a lot of time.
LIFESTYLE
There are times when I'm taken away from my family, but I do have a lot of control over that, since I work for myself.
COLLEGE PREPARATION
My liberal arts background involved a lot of reading and writing, and in law school, as well as in the practice of law, you are immersed in words. I might have taken Spanish instead of French, as some of my clients are Hispanic.
CAREER ADVICE
Make sure your heart is into the study of law, and the practice of law. Many people burn out because being a lawyer isn't always as glamorous and lucrative as it appears on TV. And the job market is very competitive.
SHU EXPERIENCE
My college years were very eye-opening and enlightening to me. SHU got me out of my insular shell from high school, and I explored concepts totally foreign to my growing up. My professors and advisors were extremely encouraging.
