Sacred Heart University junior Jason Guberman-Pfeffer has been selected as an Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) Honors Fellow for 2007-2008. The ISI Honors Program, a highly selective law fellowship, is offered to only 50 undergraduate students each year.

Guberman-Pfeffer, a Political Science major who is also pursuing minors in History and Middle Eastern Studies, says that the program will explore the evolution of the Western legal tradition in an intellectually rigorous environment.

The theme of this year’s fellowship is "Law in the Western Tradition: Common, Constitutional, Natural, and Divine." The fellowship begins with a summer conference that takes place in Quebec City. Following the conference, the fellows and their faculty mentors will continue their discussions online and may participate in weekend colloquia throughout the year. Their fellowship culminates with ISI’s National Leadership Conference in the spring.

“I hope to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the history, development and continued relevance of Western law to our society,” said Guberman-Pfeffer.

As an SHU student, Guberman-Pfeffer has distinguished himself academically and personally. Among his many achievements, he is a student in SHU's Thomas More Honors Program, he is president of the Class of 2009, he served as the only student panelist at a Middle East roundtable discussion, he was president of the Commuter Council, and he organized a Freedom Concert in conjunction with the Middle Eastern Studies Program and HAMSA, a Middle Eastern civil rights organization. His future plans include law school. “My goal is to devote my life to the pursuit of the betterment of our nation through public service,” he said.

This summer, Guberman-Pfeffer says that he’ll continue to be busy. In addition to ISI’s summer conference, he’ll be taking an online political science course, working on an independent study with Professor of Government and Politics Dr. John Kikoski, and “preparing the Class of 2009’s Student Government Board for a great year ahead.”

While his academic accomplishments speak for themselves, Guberman-Pfeffer credits his faculty mentors, Dr. Kikoski, Dr. Steven Michels, and Fr. Jean Ehret, Ph.D., with his participation in this prestigious fellowship. “Without their dedication, encouragement, unfaltering support and blessings, I would not have applied, no less been chosen,” he said.
