Archbishop Daniel Ciobotea, Ph.D., who received the degree Doctor of Theology, honoris causa, from Sacred Heart University in 2003, has been elected Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Archbishop Daniel was honored by SHU in recognition of the rich contribution his work has made in the field of theology and of the spirituality of the Christian East, as well as his personal witness in working for Church unity.

Archbishop Daniel will be the sixth patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. For the past 17 years, he has been the metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina in northeast Romania. He is widely known for his work in the ecumenical movement.

Archbishop Daniel was educated at the Theological University of Sibiu and the "Albert Ludwig" University in Freiburg im Breisgau, Faculty of Catholic Theology (Germany). He was also educated at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Humanistic Sciences in Strasbourg (France) and the University Theological Institute in Bucharest, where he received doctorate degrees.

Among many honors, Archbishop Daniel received the Emmanuel Heufelder Award granted by the Niederaltaich Abbey for ecumenical work. He is currently a member of the Presidium of the Conference of European Churches and serves as a judge for the Templeton Prize for Progress toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities.
