SHU SENIOR TO VOLUNTEER IN AFRICA
Jacqueline Bouthot, a senior at Sacred Heart University, will be traveling to Zambia, Africa, in January to care for handicapped children.

Bouthot, of Biddeford, Maine, will be living and working with Sister Cathy Crawford in Mongu. Crawford runs the Mongu Branch of the Cheshire Home Society of Zambia, which is part of the Cheshire Foundation International – an organization that provides care for the terminally ill, elderly and handicapped in 54 countries worldwide.

At the Mongu branch, Bouthot will help care for 63 handicapped children during her three-month stay.  During that time, Bouthot will assist the children in post-surgery rehabilitation through a holistic exercise program.

“Volunteering abroad has been a desire of mine for a very long time,” Bouthot said. “While I am in Zambia, I hope to be of service wherever I am needed, and I desire to do God’s work, regardless of how simple or mundane it may be.”

Bouthot, who will complete her undergraduate studies this month, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Geriatric Health. She has plans to attend graduate school to study occupational therapy.

“I also hope to discover different ways in which occupational therapy is needed in our world and apply what I learn to my graduate studies and field work,” Bouthot said.
