FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Students in the GE Foundation Scholars Program at Sacred Heart University, General Electric volunteers, and Bridgeport elementary school students will work together during a bicycle building event on February 2 in University Commons from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to Virginia Stephens, director of the Scholars Program, six students from John Winthrop School will work with the scholars and GE volunteers to build six bikes. The task will explore team dynamics as teams of students and volunteers exercise skills in communications, problem-solving, and networking. The elementary school students, who have not yet been selected, will be chosen based on academic achievement and citizenship – values of the GE Foundation Scholars Program.
“Bicycle building is an incredibly satisfying way of practicing the skills characteristic of high-performance teams while having fun at the same time,” Stephens said.
The elementary school students will be awarded the assembled bikes following the team building exercise.
Kenya Rutland, of KJR Consulting, a training firm based in Manchester, Conn., will facilitate the event.
Funded by the GE Foundation, a division of General Electric, the Scholars Program supports academically talented minority students. Currently, 18 students are enrolled in the program at SHU.
