SHU PRESIDENT DR. CERNERA RECEIVES GRAYMOOR AWARD

Fr. James Puglisi, SA, Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (at left), presented the Graymoor Award to SHU President Dr. Anthony J. Cernera in October.

Over 300 attended the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement 15th Annual Sharing Hope Dinner on October 10th at The Pierre in New York City.  The benefit, which raised approximately $250,000 this year, honored those who have shown a commitment to helping others and inspiring hope.

Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., President of Sacred Heart University and founder of the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding, and Dr. Frank E.  Lucente, Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, both received the Graymoor Award.   Andrea and Renato Berzolla, of Riverside, CT, received the Graymoor Community Service Award.   Father James F. Puglisi, SA, Minister General, presented the awards.

The proceeds support the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, a Roman Catholic order of brothers and priests founded at Graymoor in Garrison, NY in 1898 by Father Paul Wattson.  Their worldwide ministries include serving the homeless and those suffering from alcoholism, drug addictions, and HIV/AIDS; pastoral care in parishes and hospitals around the world; offering respite and hope to those in need of spiritual renewal; and Christian unity and interfaith dialogue among Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists.
