Dr. Joan Kelly |
Dr. Joan M. Kelly will explore the footsteps of Saint Paul and his life as a missionary, theologian, preacher, teacher, and martyr at Sacred Heart University on Tuesday, April 28th at 7:30 p.m. in the University Commons on campus. The lecture will be held in celebration of the Roman Catholic Church’s Pauline Year (2008-2009). The event, which is sponsored by Campus Ministry, University College, the Center for Catholic Thought Ethics & Culture and Religious Studies Department, is free and open to the public.
Dr. Kelly, a native of Massachusetts, attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools there staffed by the Religious of the Holy Union of the Sacred Hearts. She received her undergraduate degree from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn., a master’s degree in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., a master’s in counseling psychology from Fairfield University, in Fairfield, Conn., and a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Foundation headquartered at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. In her early career, Dr. Kelly served as the director of religious education for Saint Pius X Church in Fairfield, Conn. and was subsequently named supervisor of religious education for the Diocese of Bridgeport.
For the past eighteen years, the Center for Spirituality and Ministry at SHU has sent Dr. Kelly throughout the state of Connecticut to provide theological classes for the clergy, religious and laity of the various dioceses. Cardinal Edward M. Egan, Archbishop of New York, recommended Dr. Kelly for the Papal Cross which she received from Pope John Paul II in recognition of her outstanding performance as a teacher of theology. She has lectured widely on Saint Paul during the Pauline Year, 2008-2009.
The Pauline Year has been proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI in preparation for the 2,000th anniversary of the apostle's birth.
