Alternative Therapies
1 Credit Course, PS298-L5
Note: Will be offered two Saturdays
Objectives: An overview of popular self-help models, alternative therapies and spirituality in relation to traditional approaches to counseling in the helping professions. Students will learn about utilization of belief systems to promote empowerment and enhance interactions in working with people. Also included will be applied psychological formats and inventories for helping people learn how to apply personal strengths to their interests and pursuits.

Substance Abuse, Addictions, and the Family
1 Credit Course, PS298-L1
Objectives: This brief, introductory course will explore substance abuse and addictions in the family setting. Content will include family patterns, codependency, avoidance, issues of self-esteem, resentment and shame, forgiveness, recovery, and spiritual awakening. Other addictions such as gambling, food, anger and people pleasing will be covered as well. Course format will include discussion, participation, and audio-visual presentations.

Couples and Relationships
1 Credit Course, PS298-L4
Objectives: This brief, introductory course will explore the functional and emotional components of close relationships between two people. Topics will include intimacy, trust, compatibility, power struggles, togetherness, and the influences of birth order and early childhood experiences. Course format will include discussion, participation, and audio-visual presentations.

Filial Play Seminar
2 Credit Course, PS298-L2
Objectives: A unique model to enhance family bonds and communication. This model offers specific play techniques for families with young children, individual play techniques for the child, and facilitates increased sensitivity to family/child dynamics. Also included, are videotapes demonstrating parent-child techniques for issues such as divorce and traumatic events; developmental issues, instruments for assessment and differential responses of ADD children.

Developmental and Learning Disorders of Childhood
1 Credit Course, PS298-L3
Objectives: This course explores the nature of a variety of learning disabilities and developmental disorders in children. It will include practical, experiential and theoretical examination of differences in thinking, perception and social/emotional responses of children with disorders such as ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, the autism spectrum and other developmental disabilities. A major focus is on their responses to peers, school tasks and family relations, as well as strategie
