WELCOME
On behalf of the Women's Studies Program at Sacred Heart University, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Program's website.  If you have any questions regarding the program minorthe courses that are included in the minor, the faculty who teach those courses, or any of the other on-campus activities sponsored by the Women's Studies Program, please contact me at 203-396-8391 or McLaughlinJ@sacredheart.edu

Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary program of academic study that draws on the new scholarship about women from different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds in order to examine and critique traditional models of thinking and to develop creative ways of exploring women and their experiences.  Theoretical and critical debates that have contributed to modern gender studies are also an integral part of the curriculum.

As the global community continues to explore universal themes of justice, equality, human dignity and integrity, personal freedom and political liberty, the facts of women's lives have become issues of international focus, so that a minor in Women's Studies is a natural compliment to such majors such as Business; Criminal Justice; History; Literature and Foreign Languages; Media Studies; Psychology; Religious Studies, and Sociology and Social Work.

The program in Women's Studies also provides students with the opportunity to enrich their understanding of women as well as men through multiple fields of inquiry, and students are encouraged to explore the meaning and application of such understanding to their own lives.  The members of the faculty in the Women's Studies Program, drawn from several departments at Sacred Heart University, are superior scholars in their own disciplines and are committed to academic excellence.  They seek to engage students in critical thinking about women's and men's social, economic, cultural, and religious roles, and to challenge students to develop their own intellectual understanding of the impact of gender as an organizing force and cultural construct in all societies.

The faculty of the Women's Studies Program welcomes you.  We are very eager to talk with you about the academic program as well as the other aspects of the program in Women's Studies, including Women's Studies-sponsored presentations of speakers and events, and Women's Studies social and cultural service to the Sacred Heart Community.  We ask that you also explore this website for the other political, scientific, sports-related, and juridical dimensions of interest to the program in Women's Studies at Sacred Heart University.
