| | | | INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT As Assistant Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, I proudly represent the organization that is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining telecommunications, computing, networking, and all other forms of electronic information resources on campus. The official mission of the Information Technology Division is to provide a technology base for the University that empowers its users to do their job more efficiently and effectively with reduced costs, and to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure in a manner that ensures reliable, quality, ubiquitous service that is transparent to the users.
The cornerstone of our information technology initiatives at Sacred Heart University is our Mobile Computing Program. Similar to a growing number of universities throughout the US, we have a mandatory laptop requirement for students. However, unlike other schools, we provide our new students with the latest in laptop technology and then refresh that technology by providing them with a new laptop after their sophomore year. Students keep the second laptop when they graduate. In addition, we support this program with a number of highly effective complimentary initiatives: a Laptop Service Center that is open Monday - Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when school is in session. The summer and break schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., a Call Center, free training classes that are routinely scheduled throughout the academic year, a loaner pool of laptops that are available to any student whose laptop is being serviced, and a campus-wide, state-of-the-art wireless network which supplements our hardwired network and provides Internet connectivity from nearly every location on campus, inside and out.
The Information Technology Division provides campus-wide technology support and is organized into four departments: Administrative Computing, Academic Computing, Telecommunications and Networking, and Administrative IT. Together these folks provide services including Cable TV, US Mail delivery, development and maintenance of the University web site, instructional technology assistance, maintenance of the campus voice and data networks, management of the mobile computing program as well as management of all administrative software programs – for example: Colleague, Benefactor, Sequitur, etc.
The people that support these ongoing programs and initiatives are dedicated professionals that stand ready to meet the needs and requirements of the faculty, staff, and student body. This can at times be a demanding task, since “needs” often exceed available resources. But, if there is any feasible way to meet a valid need, the staff in the Information Technology Division will most assuredly do their best. Please take the time to consult with them whenever you have a question, a problem, or a need that relates to technology.
