Service Awards from 1996 to 2002
2002 – Outstanding Community Service for an Individual Student
To Keri Nastri for her mentoring work in the Big Friend, Little Friend program with Sunshine Kids and in the Academic Mentoring program at
John Winthrop School.
2002 – Student Group Award
To Alpha Sigma Psi Fraternity for their sponsorship of a week-long Child Advocacy Program, which explored some of the issues affecting children in
Bridgeport.
2001 – Student Group Award
To Alpha Sigma Psi Fraternity for forming relationships with several local agencies.
Eight of the fraternity's members have made long-term commitments to children through programs that include Evergreen, Mi Amigo and You Are Special.
Many members have also participated in Habitat for Humanity and served meals in soup kitchens.
2000 – Special Award
To Linda Farber, Ph.D., assistant professor of Chemistry, for her work advising the Science Ambassadors, a group of students who provide free workshops for elementary school students.
1999 – Student Group Award
To Taft Commons, a residence hall that houses 90 students, for having 85 percent of its residents participate in service to the community.
They hosted Halloween parties for the neighborhood children, led clean-up projects in
Bridgeport, worked at Habitat for Humanity and volunteered with the Bridgeport Midnight Run project to provide food for the homeless.
1999 – Outstanding Community Service for an Individual Student
To Sean Otterspoor for his work as president of the University's Habitat for Humanity chapter, AmeriCorps and a project he developed called the Step-Up Program in which volunteers repair the porches of homes whose residents can't afford the costs.
1998 – Special Award
To Jack deGaffenried, assistant professor of Art, for a three-week illustration course he conducted for four years for area high school students.
He also organized an art show that raised more than $2,500 for Alpha Home, a
Bridgeport facility for homeless families
1997 – Outstanding Community Service for an Individual Student
To Tina Jones for her work in organizing the Best Buddies Program.
1997 – Presidential Youth Service Award
To
Sacred Heart University students Elizabeth Rathbun, Tina Jones and Rosemary Roselli for their participation in a mentoring program.
1997 – Special Award
To John Roney, Ph.D., associate professor of History, for his work as faculty advisor with the University's Habitat for Humanity campus chapter.
1996 – Special Award
To Ralph Corrigan, Ph.D., professor of English, for his work as one of the founders of the University's Operation Bridgeport and for his volunteerism with Hope is Here and Merton Center.
1996 – Student Group Award
To Delta Phi Kappa Sorority for the sisters' work as Girl Scout leaders in Bridgeport elementary schools and as tutors at the John Winthrop Elementary School.
