
Alternative Spring Break Options for 2008:
Beaumont, TX
It never gets cold in Beaumont! Beaumont is 80 miles east of Houston and 1 hour from Galveston in the heart of the nation's petrochemical engine. Tropical climate, friendly people, great food and 30 minutes from the beach. Share experiences with Habitat homeowners. Beaumont Habitat is planning to build an entire house in one week! During the summer of 2005 Beaumont was hit by Hurricane Rita. This storm damaged not only homes along the Gulf Coast, but the Beaumont Habitat Offices and ReStore as well. Beaumont Habitat has had it's very own personal experience with what it means to be homeless. This past summer three "Home in a Box" houses were dedicated as part of the Rita recovery program. These three homes in a box came from California; Suffolk County, NY; and Rockefeller Center in New York City. In September of 2006 Sacred Heart University was part of the Operation Home Delivery construction in Rockefeller center.
Biloxi, MS
HFHMGC is building new, affordable, decent homes for many victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Habitat Village is located in East Biloxi, a few miles from the beach. Share experiences with Habitat homeowners. The village provides three meals a day with many attractions and activities located nearby. Work on Habitat homes in a variety of construction stages. The Biloxi area is in the construction stage of re-building since Hurricane Katrina. This will be Sacred Heart University’s 5th trip to help re-build in Mississippi since the area was devastated in 2005. In Biloxi, Mississippi’s SHU group will be staying in Yankie Stadium. This has been the place to stay for all Habitat groups, from all over the country, that have gone down to the Biloxi area since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Three meals a day will be provided by the Salvation Army.
Wilmington, NC
SHU Habitat’s 7th year in Wilmington, NC. A quaint college (UNC – Wilmington) town right on Cape Fear, and minutes from the ocean. Share experiences with Habitat homeowners. Many restaurants and shops in the neighborhood. Habitat builds an entire house in one week!
Tucson, AZ
Close to the border of Mexico, we’ll be staying at the Newman Center at the University of Arizona! Hot, dry climate. Come and build houses in a large Habitat neighborhood! Share experiences with Habitat homeowners. Explore caves and the Sonoma Desert Museum on free time that will enhance the memories of Spring Break 2008! We’ll also visit a local Indian Reservation, an historic mission church, and meet with local community activists.
