MICHELE SUHIE, PHD, MT (ASCP)
Dr. Suhie received a Bachelor of Science degree in 2001 in clinical laboratory science from The Ohio State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude with Distinction.  Her undergraduate research included identification of surrogate risk factors for acute myocardial infarction.  After working in the Critical Care Lab at The Ohio State University Medical Center, she joined the faculty of the Medical Technology Division in the School of Allied Medical Professions at Ohio State, where she served as an instructor, coordinator of admissions and clinical internships, and division honors representative.  She instructed courses in introductory clinical lab science, phlebotomy, and urinalysis and body fluids.  While teaching in Medical Technology at Ohio State, Dr. Suhie earned her M.A. (2005) and Ph.D. (2006), both in Workforce Development and Education, specializing in health education, adult education, and gerontology.  In 2005, she received the Award of Excellence in the Ph.D. Program from the Department of Workforce Development and Education.

Dr. Suhie’s research interests include health and wellness in older adults, heart disease in women, psycho-social retirement preparation, and laboratory medicine in the care of older adults.  Dr. Suhie’s research has been presented at conferences of the American Society on Aging, the Gerontological Society of America, and the Ohio Association for Gerontology and Education (OAGE).  Her research has received several awards including the Kaplan Outstanding Graduate Paper Award from OAGE, the Ray Travel Award from the OSU Council of Graduate Students, and third place in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Hayes Graduate Research Forum at Ohio State.

Community involvement is very important to Dr. Suhie.  She has been involved as a part-time instructor for Columbus State Community College, where she taught courses for several independent living facilities, in addition to volunteering as an instructor for courses at senior centers in both Ohio and Connecticut.  She has also served as a board member to the Ohio Association for Gerontology and Education and as a member of the resource committee for the Columbus State Community College’s Lifelong Learning Institute.

As a recent addition to the faculty at Sacred Heart University, Dr. Suhie currently teaches ‘Wellness Across the Continuum of Care’ in the Geriatric Health and Wellness Program, the Special Project capstone course in the bridge-Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, and Pathophysiology and Pharmacology in the Human Movement and Sports Science Program.
