FIVE YEAR TIMELINE

The course map describes the most compact path for progressing through the Five year program. Following this plan will permit program completion by May of the fifth year.   Please note, you must maintain a 2.75 overall GPA as an undergraduate and a 3.0 GPA as a Graduate student

Freshman Year

  • Attend information sessions
  • Work on university CORE, commit to a major, be aware of non–education course requirements.
  • Begin application preparation (work with grad admission department)
  • Register for Praxis I exam or start Praxis waiver process
  • Collect materials

Sophomore Year

  • Application materials should be complete by November 1
  • Praxis I test scores/ waiver may require more than 5 weeks to obtain. Plan to take this test as early as 1st year.
  • Plan of study interviews and admission review interviews may require advance scheduling of 3-6 weeks.
  • Plan to register for Education courses in spring of 2nd year (to begin course work Fall of 3rd year)

Junior Year

  • Take the four ED courses planned this year (program is the same for elementary and secondary candidates).
  • Recommend that ED 101 / ED 205 be taken together and ED 152/ ED 229 be taken together.
  • Candidates engaged in semester abroad programs should make up missed ED classes in summer sessions or modify fourth year to 2 courses in fall and 3 courses in spring.

Senior Year

  • Take the three ED courses planned for this year.
  • Have a mandatory meeting which will be scheduled with your Graduate Admissions Counselor to sign Intern Agreement and review your progress.
  • Candidate must meet with advisor to complete application for internship, application for student teaching and plan MAT concentration and course selection.

5th year

  • Begin MAT course work in Late Spring (June semester)
  • Begin Internship placement in August
  • Student teaching begins in January
  • MAT commencement is in May

If a candidate does not complete the BA/BS degree by May their senior year, their participation in the five year program is ended. They will be withdrawn from graduate ED courses in which they have been registered. They will be remove from internship placement .They may apply (on achieving the BA/BS degree) to the traditional graduate program for completion of the certification program and MAT. Assuming that they have completed the requisite 7 undergrad ED courses, they may apply methods courses to the MAT. They may not receive permission to participate in graduate education courses before completing the BA/BS degree.
