The William H. Pitt Center Fitness Area Policies
1. Proper Spotting is required
First, do not have someone spot you if you cannot lift the weight yourself. If you do not feel comfortable spotting someone then tell them. Do not spot with one hand. When spotting, always keep the weight moving for the person no matter what they say and do not let the person get stuck---this struggling is when injury can occur.
2. Remove the weights from the bar when you are finished with them and return them to their proper storage area.
This is simple courtesy to all individuals. No one wants to, or can, unload heavy plates off of bars and machines.
3. Return dumbbells to their proper storage area.
4. Do not drop of slam weights.
Contrary to popular belief this can cause greater injury to you and can damage the equipment. If you cannot lift the weight without dropping it on the last rep then it is too heavy for you. Also, it is distracting to others.
5. Proper attire and hygiene is required.
Exercise shoes must be worn. No sandals, jeans, skirts, etc. Only proper exercise attire is required.
6. No swearing or yelling in the fitness area for any reason.
This is common sense because profanity can be offensive to others. If you feel the need to scream during a set…don’t…because it does not aid in the lift, it distracts others, and is annoying to most people.
7. Wipe down equipment.
Again, a common sense rule pertaining to courtesy.
8. No cell phone use while on cardio equipment or while using weights.
This is very dangerous and distracting to others. The gym is a place to “work” and not to socialize. Use your phone in the lobby areas.
9. Always ask someone if it is okay to work in with them on a piece of equipment.
It is not okay to work in with someone if the other person uses a lot more weight than you as it may take too long to change the weights (e.g., bench press). Wait until that person is done.
10. Do not take too long at the water fountain.
If you are getting a drink that is fine, but if you are filling up your water bottle, check the area to see if someone is behind you that is just waiting for a drink.
11. Do not spit or blow your nose in the water fountain or garbage.
This is uncalled for in any setting.
12. Do not leave empty bottles or paper towels in the fitness area or on equipment.
No one is here to pick up after you.
