Thomas Curran, Ph.D., Professor of Asian History; received a BA from the University of Delaware(1974) and MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees from Columbia University (1978, '80, and '86). Prior to coming to Sacred Heart in 1986, he taught at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point), Fordham University, and Lehman College (CUNY).
Teaching Areas: Chinese and Japanese history and culture and the history of the Vietnam War.
Research Interest: Early 20th century Chinese educational and social history.
Publications: Educational Reform in Republican China: The Failure of Educators to Create a Modern Nation (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2005). His current projects include an anthology, Essays on the Civil Service Examination in China, and a monograph, A Study of Huang Yanpei (1878-1965): Educational Leader in the Reform Period, both of which are under contract with The Edwin Mellen Press.
Dr. Curran is a member of the American Historical Association, the Association for Asian Studies, the History of Education Society, and Phi Alpha Theta.
