The fourth in our series of exhibits about The Elements focuses on Earth. The pre-Socratic philosopher, Empedocles (c. 492-432 B.C.), noted the world’s division into four naturally occurring Elements –“earth, sea, air and the fiery aether of the heavenly bodies” – were the basis of all matter (Campbell, Gordon, Department of Ancient Classics, The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). For centuries, these elements continued to be the foundation for our decoding of the world. Contemporary artists exploring the ‘Blue’ Planet and the state of the earth today.

READ ESSAY
The Transcendent & Sublime exhibit has been created in response to Sacred Heart University’s yearlong celebration of the new Chapel on our campus. Slated to open in the 2008-09 academic year, the Chapel will include a large-scale mosaic created exclusively for the Chapel by Father Marko I. Rupnik, S.J.
Father Rupnik created the mosaics that cover the walls of Pope John Paul’s personal chapel in Rome, which was commissioned in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the late Pope’s ordination. He is best known for his ability to combine Eastern and Western Christian iconography in his work, a few samples of which can be viewed at www.sacredheartphotos.com/rupnik.
This exhibition, curated by Deborah Frizzell, includes four contemporary artists whose work explores the theme of the transcendent and the sublime in the modern world.
