Silliman Company is the Southern Connecticut branch of the Nathan Hale ROTC Battalion, based at UConn-Storrs. Serving all colleges in Southern and Western Connecticut, the Silliman Company is based at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
The Silliman Company, named after General Gold Selleck Silliman of the Revolutionary War, conducts classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the academic year, with leadership labs on Wednesday afternoons. Optional for non-contracted Cadets, it is at these leadership labs where Cadets get hands on experience in Army tactics, field craft, land navigation, and a host of other exciting activities under the supervision of Army officers and NCO’s. In addition, physical training (PT), also optional for non-contracted cadets, is conducted at Sacred Heart in the mornings three days a week. Finally, there is one large scale, weekend long field training exercise (FTX) conducted each semester, for which Silliman Company teams up with Knowlton Company of UConn-Storrs and other ROTC battalions in the region for realistic and fun Army training that encourages growth in leadership abilities and physical fitness.
Contracted Cadets have the opportunity to be paid to participate in a number of exciting paid summer training opportunities. These include Airborne, Air Assault, and Mountain Warfare schools, the Cadet Troop Leadership Training (CTLT) internship program as an acting platoon leader, and many others. After the junior (MSIII) year, Cadets join all others MSIII cadets from across the nation at Warrior Forge, a five week evaluation and training event designed to prepare them to lead training of younger Cadets during their senior (MSIV) year and for commissioning into the Army.
Connecticut Army ROTC offers many excellent benefits for contracted Cadets. With 2, 3 and 4 year full tuition scholarships available, tax-free stipends between $300 and $500 per month (depending on Cadet year), and book allowances of $600 per semester, Army ROTC can help make college affordable. Add to these benefits that a student can receive through Simultaneous Membership in the National Guard, and even the highest cost colleges become affordable for almost anyone qualified to join Army ROTC.
There is no obligation for service in the Army for ROTC participants until they sign their contract or accept a scholarship, at which point they incur a 3 or 4 year Active Duty commitment, or a 6 year Reserve/National Guard commitment.
