MATTHEW KENNEY, PH.D.
“I believe that we come to know God and ourselves best when we strive to see God in others, and reach out to them in service. In the experiences or worship, prayer and service we both discover and uncover our true selves, and what it means to be a member of a community. At Sacred Heart University, this is the most important thing we do. We strive to educate the whole person, and provide opportunities for intellectual, spiritual, and interpersonal growth. Upon graduation, our students are truly able to ‘go out and heal a broken world’ through the lessons they have learned, and the women and men they have become as a result of the time they have spent with us.”
Dr. Matthew Kenney is the Executive Assistant to the President and Interim Director of Campus Ministry. He also teaches Bioethics in the Religious Studies Department. He came to the University in 2007. Prior to this he served as Principal, Department Chair and Religious Studies teacher at Saint Joseph High School in Trumbull, Connecticut. He has spent many years working with young adults in secondary and higher education, as well as in peer counseling and pastoral ministry environments. In addition to his responsibilities at the University, he currently serves as the community ethicist for the Institutional Ethics Committee at Saint Vincent Medical Center in Bridgeport, and as a Marriage Encounter facilitator and Eucharistic minister within the diocese.
Dr. Kenney holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Theology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as a Certificate in Health Care Ethics from Duquesne’s Center for Health Care Ethics. He earned a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies and Bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Humanities from Providence College, where he also ran track, indoor track, and cross country, and met his wife, Bernadette. His hobbies and interests include reading, martial arts, weight lifting, and walking his dog, Bailey.
