Sacred Heart University to Host Lecture by Author Andrew Skotnicki
Manhattan College professor to discuss the relationship between Catholic teachings and the American criminal justice system.
WHO: | Andrew Skotnicki, associate professor of religious studies at Manhattan College, and author of the books “Criminal Justice and the Catholic Church” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007) and “Religion and the Development of the American Penal System” (University Press of America, 2000). Skotnicki received his Ph.D. in religion and society from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif. He has also taught at Georgetown University and The Seminary for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. |
WHAT: | Mr. Skotnicki will deliver a lecture titled “Sin, Delinquency and the extent of the Carceral Net.” “I'll be looking at the blurring of the lines between crime and sin in the U.S. that has produced not only the highest imprisonment rates in the world, but also the deliberate targeting of marginal populations,” Skotnicki says. “All of this violates the letter and spirit of Catholic teaching regarding criminal justice.” |
