DAVID TRACY OF UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO DIVINITY SCHOOL TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREE FROM SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – David Tracy, Greeley Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Catholic Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School, will be honored by Sacred Heart University with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, at a special convocation on Wednesday, April 23 at 2 p.m. in University Commons. The event is open to the public.
The special academic convocation will include a procession of university dignitaries in full academic dress. Immediately following the degree-granting ceremony Fr. Tracy will deliver an address titled “On Longing for the Incomprehensible God.”
Fr. Tracy taught a wide variety of courses in contemporary theology at the Divinity School. He offers classes in philosophical, systematic, and constructive theology and hermeneutics, and courses dealing with issues and persons in religion and modern thought. He has served on the university’s Committee on the Analysis of Ideas and Methods and the Committee on Social Thought.
According to a recent article in the national Catholic publication America, “David Tracy’s attention to method in theology and his far-ranging eclecticism demonstrates the breadth of the Catholic analogical imagination. His ability to converse with virtually the whole range of Western humanistic intellectual culture has preserved the Catholic intellectual tradition in the secular academy as few others have.”
Fr. Tracy’s many publications include: “The Achievement of Bernard Lonergan” (1970); “Blessed Rage for Order: The New Pluralism in Theology” (1975); “The Analogical Imagination: Christian Theology and the Culture of Pluralism” (1981); “Talking about God: Doing Theology in the Context of Modern Pluralism,” with John Cobb (1983); “A Short History of the Interpretation of the Bible,” with Robert Grant (1984); “A Catholic Vision,” with Stephen Happel (1984); “Plurality and Ambiguity” (1987); “Dialogue with the Other: The Inter-Religious Dialogue” (1990); and “On Naming the Present: God, Hermeneutics, and Church” (1994). Fr. Tracy is also currently writing a book on God.
David Tracy was born in 1939 in Yonkers, New York. He earned his licentiate in 1964 and his doctorate in 1969, both at Rome’s Gregorian University. In 1982 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a priest in the Diocese of Bridgeport.
