TIMELINE
The course map describes the most compact path for progressing through the Five Year Program. Following this plan will permit program completion by May of the fifth year.

It includes provision for five courses in LS-SU of the fifth year—MAT 6 can be placed in either LS or SU.

· The LS and SU semesters have been increased to 6 weeks to permit two courses in one 6 week session. This is a deviation from present practice and is intended to permit a total of 15 credits in the summer sessions for five year candidates only.

· The Fall semester shows 4 courses during the first semester of interning. This is a deviation from present practice as well.

· The required placement of an MAT course in WI will call for at least 3 MAT courses to be added in this semester.

Candidates may opt to defer MAT 6, MAT 9, and/or MAT 10 to May Intensive, Late Spring, or Summer semesters following the fifth year. Such deferral will permit candidates to attend the May Commencement but the MAT will be dated in August.

1st year

Prospects:

- Attend information sessions

- Work on university CORE, commit to a major, be aware of non–education course requirements.

- Begin application preparation (work with Graduate Admission Department)

           Start Praxis waiver

           Collect materials

Plan on submitting application in FALL

2nd year

Application materials should be complete by November 1

- Praxis I test scores/ waiver may require more than 5 weeks to obtain. Plan to take this test as early as 1st year.

- Plan of study interviews and admission review interviews may require advance scheduling of 3-6 weeks.

- Plan to register for ed courses in spring of 2nd year ( to begin course work Fall of 3rd year)

3rd year

Four ED courses planned this year. Program is the same for elementary and secondary candidates.

- Recommend that ED 101 / ED 205 be taken together and ED 152 / ED 229 be taken together. Scheduling issues may not permit this. The intention is to compete these 4 courses in the 3rd year. Four ED courses in one semester in this year is not permitted.

- Intention is to offer two sections of each course each semester.

- Candidates engaged in semester abroad programs should modify fourth year to 2 courses in fall and 3 courses in spring.

4th year

Three ED courses planned for this year. ED 7 differs for elementary (ED 387) and secondary (ED 272)

- ED 5 and 6 will be offered in multiple sections each semester to facilitate scheduling problems.

- ED 7 for elementary will be offered both fall and spring

- ED 7 for secondary will only be planned for spring unless there are more than 30 secondary candidates in the cohort

- Candidate must meet with advisor to complete application for internship, application for student teaching, and plan MAT concentration and course selection

5th year

Begin MAT course work in Late Spring  (June semester)

Begin Internship placement in August

Student teaching begins in  January

MAT commencement is in May

If a candidate does not complete the BA/BS degree by May of the fourth year, his/her participation in the Five Year Program is ended. The candidate will be withdrawn from any Graduate Education courses in which he/she has been registered and will also be removed from Internship placement. On achieving his/her BA/BS degree, the candidate may apply to the traditional Graduate Education Program in order to complete his/her remaining teacher certification and MAT Program requirements. Assuming that the candidate has completed the requisite 7 undergraduate ED courses, he/she may apply course credits from methods courses towards MAT degree requirements. Permission for a candidate to participate in Graduate Education courses before completing his/her BA/BS degree will not be granted.
