COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

SUMMARY AND GROUP WRITING
Jim Castonguay

Summary
Summary consists of making a concise statement of the meaning of a text in your own words, boiling it down into a much shorter version of the original.

Write a 2-3 paragraph abstract/summary of the film viewed for class intended for publication in the movie section of the Connecticut Post.

Discussion/Writing Group Exercise
Have a person read her/his response to the out-of-class question. After each individual person has finished reading, the listeners should take about two minutes to respond to the question in writing. There should be no spoken conversation until each person has read and been responded to in writing. After you have gone around the group once, repeat the process, but this time the listeners should write constantly while the person is reading. Each listener then summarizes her/his response for the reader, drawing from the written responses and other thoughts that come to mind.
