COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

FREEWRITING IN A FILM COURSE
Debbie Danowski (Media Studies)

After viewing each film, I had students freewrite for 10 minutes. Sometimes I gave them a topic related to the film to focus on but other times I simply let them write about the film. Then, they took the writings into their groups. Each group focused on a specific theory as related to the film. The freewrites served as a starting point for these discussions and the class presentations that followed. While this is specific to film, it could be used to respond to a chapter or reading assigned as homework or read during class.
