FIRST DAY CHARTER

First day activity that's also collaborative: get students into 5 groups and have them write a class charter that uses the syllabus as a starting point. Sections include the preamble, rights and responsibilities of teacher to students, rights and responsibilities of student to teacher, rights and responsibilities of students to each other, and by-laws governing classroom conduct/decorum. The scope of the charter can end there or it can be workshopped and formalized, but the activity serves several first day purposes.
