COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

STUDENT CRITIQUES OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES
Brian Wilson (Biology)

Objective: have the students act as peer reviewers by having them critically evaluate published papers.

Assignment: Provide a 1-2 page report with two sections. The first section summarizes the author's objectives / hypotheses, the methodology employed to test the hypotheses experimentally, the main results, and the author's interpretation of the results. The second section details major and minor points of criticism and / or suggestions that would improve the quality of the paper.

The reviewer also evaluates the merit of the work: whether the work contributes significant findings to the field of study, and whether he or she feels that the article is worthy of publication. (see attached evaluation sheet).
