INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY ED 689 WWW: Curriculum & Instruction
Course Description - This online course examines the role of teacher-created website development for a P–12 educational environment. Participants design and publish standard-based, online documents that present curricular information and include links to classroom resources. No prior computer programming experience is required. Pre-requisites - ED 578 Introduction to Computers recommended. Participants should be familiar with Blackboard along with basic computer operations, including the use of Microsoft® Word and PowerPoint. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course. Technology Requirements - Participants must have access to the Internet along with administrator privileges on a personal computer (PC) where they can download and install software. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is also required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Computers purchased prior to the year 2002 and/or Windows 98 are not recommended. Participants who use MACs are responsible for ensuring that the course instructor can view all submitted assignment files on a PC. Assignments created on a MAC that cannot be opened / viewed by the course instructor will be awarded a grade of zero. Dial-up Internet access is acceptable. However, users will experience longer wait times when accessing / uploading / downloading Internet materials.
Software Requirements - NVU (nu-view) is the primary website development software used in this course. In addition, Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is required (Word & PowerPoint). Participants with advanced website development experience can use Dreamweaver. However, tutorials on the use of Dreamweaver are not provided.
Sample Assignment - Develop an educational website that can be used by single individuals, school districts or groups of students with individual learning styles, special needs and multiple intelligences. Each website will contain elements that include among others, curricular content, student activities, and a WebQuest that is based on state / local educational standards. Field Experience - The field experience provides course participants with an experiential context in which to apply technology and educational skills, and examine how technology has been integrated into an instructional setting. Course participants will interview a teacher, curriculum coordinator, computer coordinator, librarian, special education teacher or paraprofessional. The purpose of the interview is to develop an awareness of how instructional websites encompass the concepts of networks, roles of teacher and student, school resources, and emerging technologies. In addition, the use of technology for enabling and empowering learners with diverse cultures, characteristics, abilities and socio-economic backgrounds is also investigated. In ED 689 the field experience interview can be completed via phone, email, chat room, face-to-face in one or several sessions depending upon time availability of the interviewee and the ED 689 participant.
