ED 686 - ROBOTICS
INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY

ED 686 Robotics

Course Description
- This seminar course introduces methods for integrating robotics technologies into P-12 classrooms. In collaborative groups, participants use Lego Mindstorms for Schools to build and program a robot that can perform a series of tasks. Activities focus on the development of instructional materials and student assessments that connect robotics to content standards across the curriculum. No prior computer programming experience is required.  Syllabus

Pre-requisites - ED 578 Introduction to Computers or ED 592 Advanced PC Applications recommended. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course.

Technology Requirements - Participants must have access to the Internet along with administrator privileges on a personal computer (PC) where they can download and install software. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is also required (Word, PowerPoint). Computers purchased prior to the year 2002 and/or Windows 98 are not recommended. Dial-up Internet access is acceptable. However, users will experience longer wait times when accessing / uploading / downloading Internet materials.

Sample Assignments - Collaborate with peers in the construction and programming of an educational robot. Lego Mindstorms for Schools and Robolab software are used. Create a group video showing your robot navigating a course on a coordinate grid. Develop an Instructional Unit that aligns robotics to a K-12 curricular subject area. Each Unit will include a minimun of two of the following: printable activity worksheets, coloring pages, flash cards, obstacle cut outs or other materials used to conduct your robot challenge.  Sample Video [19 MB]
