ED 642 - SPECIAL PROJECTS IN ED TECH
MAT CULMINATING REQUIREMENT OR ELECTIVE COURSE

ED 642 Special Projects in Educational Technology

Course Description - This course provides advanced practical experience in the design and implementation of computer technology in the areas of administration, curriculum, and instruction. Participants are expected to combine the knowledge acquired in at least two advanced level educational technology courses in order to beta test original software program and/or original classroom applications. An advanced knowledge of computer technology and its integration into P-12 settings is required. Note - The majority of the course is completed online, however participants must present their research findings via an on-campus poster session at the end of the semester. The course instructor may waive the on-campus poster session requirement for participants who live out of state.  Syllabus

Pre-requisites - Completion of two advanced-level educational technology courses and prior experience using Blackboard. An educational technology product created one of the participant's Ed Tech courses must be ready to beta test at the start of ED 642. Instructor permission is required prior to registration. [Please email your request along with 1) your SHU ID # 2) list the SHU Ed Tech courses completed, and 3) explain what product you plan to test and where]. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course.

Technology Requirements - Participants must have access to the Internet along with administrator privileges on a personal computer (PC) where they can download and install software. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is also required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Computers purchased prior to the year 2002 and/or Windows 98 are not recommended. Participants who use MACs are responsible for ensuring that the course instructor can view all submitted assignment files on a PC. Assignments created on a MAC that cannot be opened / viewed by the course instructor will be awarded a grade of zero. Dial-up Internet access is acceptable. However, users will experience longer wait times when accessing / uploading / downloading Internet materials.

Sample Assignment - Participants will beta test a technology prototype or innovation model that he/she has developed in a previous SHU educational technology course. Technology prototypes/innovation models must align with the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) K-12 Curricular Framework, the CSDE Computer Competency Standards for Students, and the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) "NETS" standards.  Sample Abstracts

Field Experience
- Each participant will beta test an original technology product in either a K-6 or 7-12 educational setting. A minimum target audience of three individuals must validate the effectiveness, efficiency, usability, and appeal of the technology. At the conclusion of the course, participants will present an overview of the research project to a graduate level class through a poster session. Legal issues related to the development and administration of the beta test will be explained. The presentation will include an explanation of importance for teachers to review the following legal and ethical issues with their students; copyright law, software licensing and the proper use of electronic communications.
