ELECTIVE COURSE

ED 527  Distance Learning: Methods of Instructional Design

Course Description - Online tutorial courses are created that support P-12 classroom instruction and/or provide adult learners with professional development training to facilitate lifelong learning.  Methods of instructional design for teaching and learning online will focus on the delivery of course content, the development of collaborative learning communities and the utilization of appropriate online assessment techniques.  Syllabus

Pre-requisites - ED 689 WWW: Curriculum and Instruction or prior experience in the use of HTML. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course.

Technology Requirements - Participants must have access to the Internet along with administrator privileges on a personal computer  (PC) where they can download and install software. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is also required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Computers purchased prior to the year 2002 and/or Windows 98 are not recommended. Participants who use MACs are responsible for ensuring that the course instructor can view all submitted assignment files on a PC. Assignments created on a MAC that cannot be opened / viewed by the course instructor will be awarded a grade of zero. Dial-up Internet access is acceptable. However, users will experience longer wait times when accessing / uploading / downloading Internet materials.

Access to an online web-hosting service and Moodle is mandatory. (An additional fee will be incurred that is equivilent to the cost of a textbook.)

Sample Assignment - Design and deliver course content through an OLE model that can be used by single individuals, school districts, or groups of students with individual learning styles, special needs, and multiple intelligences.

Field Experience
- Each participant will gain online experience through a teaching and learning simulation. OLE models will be developed and used to facilitate mentor and participant experiences. Students will assume an active role as the teacher of his/her own OLE lessons and as a student/participant in the OLE lessons of peers. At the conclusion of the learning experience, participants will provide feedback through the evaluation of peer OLE lessons. A 3-5 page reflection paper will be submitted that not only synthesizes a participant's role as online teacher and learner but also draws conclusions that relate to best practices in online learning.  ____________________________________________________________
